A new organization is being launched in Hong Kong, aimed at resolving international disputes through mediation. It's hoped that the International Organization for Mediation will enhance Hong Kong's international standing, and lead to a better global awareness of its unique status. CGTN's Chen Xiaoshu has the report.

The new preparatory office has been jointly set up between China and a number of other nations.

High level government officials from the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, joined government officials from the signatory states at the opening ceremony.

ZHI ZHENFENG Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Studies Chinese Academy of Social Sciences "Geopolitical turbulence is causing many disputes and controversies. So efforts are needed to build consensus. Against that backdrop, China is working with these other countries to establish the International Organization for Mediation in the hope that international disputes and controversies can be resolved in a fair, reasonable, and peaceful manner, thus promoting friendly international exchanges and cooperation."

Starting this year, the office begins drawing up an agreed international convention.

ZHI ZHENFENG Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Studies Chinese Academy of Social Sciences "The Preparatory Office marks the beginning of a substantial phase in establishing the International Organization for Mediation."

Hong Kong has a high degree of internationalization, and is the only common law jurisdiction within China.

Its comprehensive legislative, legal protection, and enforcement systems make the city an appropriate choice to provide international mediation services to the world.

ZHI ZHENFENG Center for Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao Studies Chinese Academy of Social Sciences "A report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China mentions the need to deepen exchanges and cooperation between Hong Kong and Macao and various countries and regions. The establishment of the Preparatory Office is an important step for China's participation in global governance, as China continues to open up and play an increasingly prominent global role.

It will be focused on international peace and cooperation, and certainly make a very important contribution to international governance."

CHEN XIAOSHU Beijing "Mediation is rooted in traditional Chinese culture. By establishing the International Organization for Mediation, China and the relevant countries are committed to dealing with their differences in a peaceful manner, using dialogue and consultation, and abandoning zero-sum games for everyone's benefit.
