The second lecture in the lecture series the “Forum of Famous Overseas Scholars“ of CASS Institute of Law and CASS Institute of International Law in 2024 held


The second lecture in the lecture series the "Forum of Famous Overseas Scholars", jointly sponsored by CASS Institute of Law and CASS Institute of International Law, was held on March 27, 2024. At the forum, Professor Benjamin L. Liebman, Director of Columbia Law School’s Hong Yen Chang Center for Chinese Legal Studies, gave a lecture entitled "Artificial Intelligence and the US Legal System".




In the lecture, Professor Liebman introduced the new legal problems that have arisen with the rapid development of artificial intelligence in the fields of intellectual property law, tort law, criminal law and constitutional law in the United States, pointed out the impact of the development of artificial intelligence on the regulatory system, and discussed the application of artificial intelligence in the administrative and judicial practice of the US.

 

 

The lecture was presided over by Professor Xie Zengyi, deputy director of CASS Institute of Law, and attended by more than 30 scholars and students from CASS Institute of Law, CASS Institute of International Law, and the Law School of the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

 

 

After the lecture, the participants exchanged views with Professor Liebman on such issues as the intellectual property rights of works generated by artificial intelligence, the legality of extracting data by large-scale AI models, the reasons for the slow legislation on artificial intelligence in the US Congress, and the use of and restrictions on artificial intelligence.

 

 

Before the lecture, a meeting was held between Professor Liebman and Professor Mo Jihong, director of CASS Institute of Law. During the meeting, the host and guest reviewed the history of friendly exchanges and cooperation between the two CASS institutes and Columbia University Law School and the Hong Yen Chang Center for Chinese Legal Studies and reached a broad consensus on continuing the cooperation in the future.
