The Symposium on Chinese Courts and the Self-shaping and Shaping-by-others of the Image of Chinese Law Held

The Symposium on Chinese Courts and the Self-shaping and Shaping-by-others of the Image of Chinese Law, sponsored by the Editorial Board of Chinese Review of International Law, was held in Beijing on the afternoon of April 10, 2024.

At the symposium, presided over by Professor Qu Xiangfei, Director of the Editorial Board of International Law Studies, a lecture was given by Dr. Chen Yanzhong, President and Grade IV Senior Judge of Ningde Court of Xiamen Maritime Court. Professor Zhao Jianwen and Professor Liu Jingdong from CASS Institute of International Law and Professor Cai Congyan from the Law School of Fudan University served as commentators at the lecture.

In the lecture, Judge Chen Yanzhong first discussed the self-shaping process of China's legal image from two specific aspects: the international influence of Chinese courts and the extraterritorial application of Chinese law. Then, from the perspective of extraterritorial judicial practice, he objectively outlines the shaping of the images of Chinese courts and Chinese law by foreign courts in two dimensions: the attitude of foreign courts towards Chinese courts and the application of Chinese law by foreign courts. Finally, he analyzed the gap between self-shaping and shaping-by-others of the image of Chinese law, explored the reasons behind it, and put forward relevant suggestions.

Professor Mo Jihong, Director of CASS Institute of Law and Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Review of International Law, delivered a speech at the Symposium. Professor Zhao Jianwen, Professor Cai Congyan, and Professor Liu Jingdong made comments on Judge Chen Yanzhong's lecture. The symposium were also attended by Professor Li Qingming, Professor Hao Luyi, Associate Professor Sun Nanxiang, Associate Professor He Tiantian, Assistant Professor Tan Guanfu, Assistant Professor Lin Qiang, Assistant Professor Wang Huiru, Assistant Professor Shen Qian and some graduate students of the Law School of the University of CASS.
