The International Symposium on Multilateralism and Advancement of International Rule of Law held in Shenzhen


The International Symposium on Multilateralism and Advancement of International Rule of Law, jointly sponsored by CASS Institute of International Law and CASS Institute of International Law in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the UN, was held in Shenzhen on October 23-24, 2025. The symposium was attended by more than 100 judges, well-known experts and scholars from nearly 30 countries, including China, Brazil, Peru, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, South Korea, Thailand, Egypt, and Argentina.
 
 
At the Opening Ceremony, presided over by Professor Mo Jihong, a member of the CASS and director of CASS Institute of Law, opening remarks were given by Mr. Zhao Zhimin, Secretary General of the CASS, Mr. Wang Hongxiang, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group and Executive Vice President of China Law Society, Mr. Mārtiņš Paparinskis, Chair of the UN International Law Commission and Professor of Public International Law at Faculty of Law of the University College London, Mr. Li Qingquan, Secretary of CPC Committee of Shenzhen and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Mr. Ye Xiangrong, Executive Vice President of Guangdong Law Society, Mr. Zhang Liwei, President of Political and Legal Affairs Commission of Shenzhen and President of Shenzhen Law Society, and Mr. Liu Yang, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Treaty and Law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. Next, keynote speeches were given by Mr. Zhang Wenxian, Convenor of the Law Department of the National Committee of Social Sciences under the Ministry of Education, President of the China Law Society Legal Education Research Association, and Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Social Sciences at Jilin University, Mr. Huang Jin, President of China International Law Society and Distinguished Professor of Humanities and Social Science of Wuhan University, Mr. Ma Xinmin, a member of the UN International Law Commission and Former Chinese Ambassador to Sudan, Mr. Mario Oyarzábal, Chair of the Drafting Committee of the UN International Law and Commission, Director-General of the Department of International Law of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, Ms. Alena Douhan, Special Rapporteur on the Negative Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights of UN Human Rights Council and Professor of International Law of Belarusian State University, Mr. Liu Zheng, Deputy Chief Judge of the First Circuit Court of the Supreme People’s Court and Senior Judge of the First Rank, Mr. César Landa, Former Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru and Professor of Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, and Mr. Liu Jingdong, Professor of the Institute of International Law, CASS.
The symposium was divided into six parallel sessions, in which participants gave presentations and carried out in-depth discussions on various issues around the topics of the Global South and New Developments in the International Rule of Law, Multilateralism and New Issues in Global Governance, Navigating a Fragmented World: Compliance and Risk Management in Cross-Border Transactions, Common Values of Mankind and the Development of Human Rights, Diversified Dispute Resolution and International Rule of Law, and High-Level Opening-Up and New International Economic and Trade Order.
