Principles of Criminal Procedure (Revised Edition)

Deng Zibin, Principles of Criminal Procedure, revised edition, Beijing: Peking University Press, April 2023.

This book is a systematic theoretical monograph on criminal procedure law independently completed by Professor Deng Zibin. Based on his 25 years of practical experience as a part-time lawyer, the author describes the ideal criminal procedure in his mind with meticulous observation, fluent writing and lucid thinking. The book is a tribute to his mentor, Professor Chen Xingliang, as well as one of his personal thought experiments. This experiment is supported by his belief in procedural justice: the author firmly believes that procedural justice is the fortress and solid shield for the protection of freedom. Without procedures, freedom can only be empty talk. Introducing universally recognized ideas and rules of procedure and practicing them earnestly is the only way for China to move towards litigation civilization.

About the author: Professor Deng Zibin is a research fellow and a doctoral supervisor at CASS Institute of Law and the head librarian of CASS Law Library. He has published a number of books, including monographs such as A Critique of the Chinese View of Substantive Criminal Law and Presumption in Criminal Law, collected works such as China on the Zebra Crossing, a co-edited work entitled Before the Law, and translated works such as Before the Law and Rethinking Criminal Law. He has also published more than a dozen papers in such academic journals as Chinese Journal of Law, China Legal Science, Peking University Law Journal, Law Science and Dushu.
