Author: Li Judan and Fu Wei

Abstract: The establishment of the labeling system for genetically modified (GM) products is necessary not only for the standardized management of the production and sale of GM products but also for the protection of consumers' right to know and to choose. To adapt to the development trend of GM technology and its product application, the authors of this article put forward the following suggestions on upholding fair market competition and protecting the lawful interests of consumers: establishing a unified labeling system that can apply to GM organisms, GM seeds and GM food; timely adjusting the labeling catalog in light of the application of GM products; replacing qualitative labeling with quantitative identification; unifying the legal liability for the violation of the labeling system for different GM products; and clarifying the specific circumstances in which the use of non-GM labeling is allowed or prohibited.
